I was born in 1960. I like that because it’s easy to remember how old I am. yaknow, the year ends in zero so...um... If you’re reading this and you do the math in your head you’ll see it isn’t very hard. ok, so...
AFTER I was born I looked around the house, figured I should just watch and learn. Not wanting to make too much of a fuss I was pretty quiet. My parents used to tell me to stop sneaking up on them. ANYWAY...so there I was. Finally I could walk and sort of reach up and touch things! I used to see my dad and some of his friends playing the piano in the livingroom and then sometimes my mom would take us kids with her to her voice lessons, and down at the bottom of what seemed an endless and death defying stairway , was EDDILLY DUDDILLY’S HOUSE...and he played the piano while my mom sang and it was amazing. so....i wanted to play the piano for sure. what a great thing that would be!?!
so that’s what I did. and that’s what I do.
growing up taking classical lessons, I thought I’d tour as a concert pianist, but as I started playing more of my own music, I wasn’t sure how to make that happen. in about 1980 I was lucky and prepared enough to get a gig playing on what was supposed to be 3 months of states club gigs with PRINCE . it turned into 7 years of making records and touring the world, making movies, and generally having a thrill ride of a lifetime.
With Prince and the Revolution, The Time, Vanity 6 and so much more.
That was my 20’s...

AFTER THE REVOLUTION disbanded i made records with my partner, and guitarist of the Revolution, Wendy Melvoin. We were able to tour a fair amount. we had our sisters on the road. we had our brothers and sisters and even our fathers in the studio over the years.
I have been blessed with always having great musicians call me for work. people like Joe Henry, Sheila E, , Erykah Badu. I’ve made records and worked with Doyle Bramhall ll, k.d. lang, Thcad Blake, SEAL, Neil Finn, Gwen Stefani... . . Wendy and I still work as composers on NBC’s Crossing Jordan, We have done several films, most recently “Something New” directed by Sanaa Hamri (daughter of artist mohammed hamri).
